50Hertz operates a control centre on the outskirts of Berlin. From here, a team of experts controls the transmission grid 24/7 and continuously strikes a balance between electricity production and electricity consumption. To this end, the control centre can instruct power plants to ramp up or power down as needed and – when the going gets tough – large electricity consumers can even be temporarily disconnected from the grid. Since the share of renewable energies (wind power and solar energy) is growing rapidly, the tasks undertaken in the control centre are becoming increasingly challenging.
Staff working in the control centre have been sitting on 24 hour chairs from StolComfort since 2011.
In these regions, 50Hertz and its around 1,400 employees safeguard the electricity supply for 18 million people around the clock.
